It’s Monday! What Are You Reading?
It’s Monday! What are you reading? is a meme hosted by Jen and Kellee where we can share what we’ve been reading and what’s on our “to read” list for this week. The great thing about this meme is that it’s especially for fans of kidlit. So, the focus is on anything from picture books to young adult novels. It’s a great way to share, discuss, learn and, of course, expand our ever-growing reading lists. Thanks to Jen and Kellee for hosting – head over to their blog to see what everyone else is reading.
So, last week was all about Thanksgiving…
Have you ever wondered what life was like for the Pilgrims when they first came to the New World? What did they eat? Did they have medicine? Did the kids have fun? How did they observe Thanksgiving? If You Sailed on the Mayflower in 1620 has the answers, making it easy to imagine life back then! We discussed it during our Thanksgiving dinner and the kids even quizzed the adults to see how much they knew about this time period.
We also reminded ourselves of all that we have to be thankful for – school, music, art, family, and more with the picture book, Thanks for Thanksgiving. Actually, in my house, we added BOOKS to the list! My two-year-old nieces especially enjoyed this one, but I have to admit that I also shared it with the older kids. The illustrations are really sweet and it is surprisingly not at all sappy or corny. This book also inspired some good dinner conversation.
What’s on our list for this week? I just finished On The Road to Mr. Mineo’s (definitely recommend it) by Barbara O’Connor and will get my review up later today. I’m also in a Grace Lin phase and plan to read Where the Mountain Meets the Moon and Starry River of the Sky. Speaking of sky, the picture book, Sky High by Germano Zullo looks interesting. And, because I know I need to read more nonfiction, The Impossible Rescue: The True Story of an Amazing Arctic Adventure is also in my pile. Last, but not least is Splendors & Glooms by Laura Amy Schlitz.
